To become a master at any skill or subject, practice is the key to success. This truth seems to be the foundation upon whichAbsolute Driftwas founded on because, unlike your typicalracing game, your object is not to win against others, but to improve until you have achieved perfection in the art of drifting. Absolute Drift is a racinggamedeveloped by Funselektor Labs and FlippFly, and in this unique indie title, you must master the art ofdriftingto become the best driver there is.
The first thing you’ll notice about Absolute Drift is its unique graphics. Absolute Drift has aminimalist aestheticfeaturing a primarily white environment. Unlike most racing games, Absolute Drift’s gameplay is presented in a top-down perspective instead of a POV or third-person perspective. The car you control looks small so you’ll be able to focus on your drifting skills around the arena. Personal preference will determine whether this minimalist aesthetic is good or bad. Some will appreciate the simplicity and cleanliness of the tracks while others will find the never-ending walls of red and white boxes to be too boring.
The music is also pretty good. It does tend to get too repetitive at times, but it does match the game’s simple graphics. For a game that’s all about skill and concentration, it helps to have music that doesn’t distract you.
Absolute Drift’s gameplay is where it sets itself from other racing games. In fact, Absolute Drift is barely a racing game at all since you don’t actually “race” with anyone. Instead, you have to collect points in order to win and you do this by becoming a better drifter to make fewer mistakes during your runs. The gamefeatures three game modes: Driftkhana, Drifting, and Mountain Drifting. There are alsofree-roaming areaswhere you can just practice until you drop. You can get6 customizable cars in the game.
This game is highlyskill-based, and the objective is notto chase the goal, but tochase perfectionby practicing as much as you can to be the best. The controls look really simple, but they very confusing in reality. You’ll find your sense of direction getting challenged every turn you make. They need a bit of time to get used to, but as the opening dialogue of the game states, in order to become a drifting master, you need a lot of patience and determination to succeed.
Despite its simple premise and aesthetics, Absolute Drift is not for casual gamers. There is no clear measurement of improvement and progress in this game. Instead, you’ll have to really hone your skills to become better and move on to the next levels in the game. If you ever decide to pick up this title, be prepared to spend countless hours and days just roaming around and practicing your drifting skills. Players who are expecting a linear path progression typical of RPGs will be sorely disappointed. Absolute Drift is a game for absolute perfectionists.
