Access Control Lists (ACLs) are a method of controlling file access that originated in the FreeBSD operating system, which was likely inspired by Dave Cutler's security system for what became NT Server. ACLs provide more detailed control over file access than the traditional Unix 'read/write/execute' system. An ACL is a list of access control entries, which the file system uses to determine how requests for access are handled.
