Aristocrat is intended to capture text and barcodes from the screen. In this respect, the tool uses optical character recognition (OCR) to extract text from images and scanned documents as well as decipher different types of barcodes. Luckily, the application can successfully decode such types as EAN-8, EAN-13, Code 39, Code 93, Code 128, ITF, Codabar, RSS-14, QR Code, Data Matrix, Aztec and PDF 417.
Aristocrat runs unobtrusively from the Menu Bar. Fortunately, it has a very straightforward workflow. In this regard, you should start by capturing the desired screen region, to which the tool automatically applies OCR. The resulting text can then be copied to the clipboard ready to be pasted in other applications. Likewise, it is possible to perform a series of post-processing tasks. These include creating a snippet in Dash, generating a new sticky note, sending an email, posting a tweet, looking the text up in a dictionary and Googling it. Likewise, it can apply text-to-speech technologies and add the resulting audio track to iTunes.
All in all, Aristocrat offers a very expedite way to capture editable text directly from your screen. However, while barcodes are always decoded accurately, the tool occasionally fails to identify scanned characters successfully. Therefore, parts of the grabbed text may need to be corrected manually. The product can be downloaded from the Mac App Store at no cost.
