Brawlhalla is a free-to-play action game wherein you have to be quick on your feet. Developed by Blue Mammoth Games and Ubisoft, this colorful platformerfeatures fast-paced combat reminiscent of Nintendo’s Super Smash Bros series. Offering a plethora of features and boundless entertainment, it's a testament to the genre's enduring appeal.
In Brawlhalla, you will have to fight against other characters on asmall floating map until either one player is left standing or thetimer stops. Eliminating someone awards you one point while dying deducts one, so be careful not to fall off.
The goal is simple: eliminate everyone else and rack up points. To send your enemies flying, keep damaging them until their health bars at the top-right corner turn red. The controls feature the movement pad on the left and action buttons on the right. You can easily distinguish the Quick Attack, Heavy Attack, Dodge/Dash, Jump, Throw Item, and Emotes buttons. Their settings allow repositioning them on the screen and adjusting their scale and transparency.
This game has online and local co-op match modes, supporting up to eight players. There’s also Ranked and Battle Pass modes. For casual matches, you have the chaotic Free-for-All; Strikeout 1v1, wherein you pick 3 characters and play 1 stock each; Friendly 2v2, wherein you can play solo or with a friend; and Experimental 1v1, which lets you try out test features. There are also some party modes available, like Brawlball and Capture the Flag.
The playable characters here are called Legends and there are currently 50 available—some of which are crossover characters. All of them can use two weapons, pick up throwable items like bombs and mines, and fight unarmed. Every week, there’s a selection of eight free characters called the Legend Rotation—but you can unlock the rest by either earning gold or buying the All Legends Pack, which unlocks them and all future characters except crossover ones forever.
Brawlhalla's Star Wars Event, commemorating May the 4th, brings the fearsome Sith apprentice Darth Maul into the game as a Mythic Crossover. Complete withcustom Signature FX and his iconic double-bladed lightsaber, Darth Maul joins a stellar lineup of Star Wars characters, including Anakin Skywalker, Ahsoka Tano, Darth Vader, and Obi-Wan Kenobi. Patch 8.08 introduces a host of new features, including Clash FXs, the addition of Vivi as a playable legend, streamer mode, and various game improvements and bug fixes.
In addition to Darth Maul's arrival, players can explore new content such as the R2-D2 Sidekick, Sith-themed avatars, emoji skins, and weapon skins modeled after lightsabers. The Star Wars-themed items are available in Mallhalla, where players can find a wide array of Star Wars-inspired items. Furthermore, logging in during the event grants players a free "Sith Lord" title reward. Darth Maul's abilities mirror those of Hattori, emphasizing his deadly and agile fighting style.
The event also features anew map, Theed Power Generator, a new Brawl of the Week game mode, and various other additions toenhance the gameplay experience for fans of Brawlhalla and Star Wars alike. Additionally, Patch 8.08 introduces new features such as theSeasonal Ranked Mode - Ranked 2v2 Strikeout, allowing players to queue solo or with a teammate to face off against enemy duos. With the addition of new clash visual and sound effects and a new map selection mode, the game continues to evolve.
Overall, Brawlhalla is a great choice for a multiplayer platformer game. It’s available on PC, mobile, and gaming consoles, allowing for full cross-play across all platforms so you can play whenever and wherever. Plus, you can create custom rooms for online and local play. Much of its issues lie in the online servers and the lag on touch controls when up against those on keyboards and controllers. However, it’s still a great game to try out.
