Captain Games is putting a new twist on survival games with Castaway on Strange Island. In this flat, pixelated world, you're a shipwreck survivor, and you're looking for a way back home. Using the hints given beyond the squares, you need to guess which direction you need to go. Guess correctly and you could get food, treasure, or (at best) a boat trip back home. If you're wrong, you're not going to be a survivor much longer.
Castaway on a Weird Island is a roguelike game inspired by 868-HACK. You're playing in an 8x8 square, each square is colored blue or white. The squares that are colored in white show a direction. It's simultaneously hiding either something positive or something negative. Positive things are food, jewelry, and (of course) a ship. Negative things may be a demon, a wild animal, or an islander guarding his house.
It's up to you to deduce what's behind the white rectangle, based on the hints you've been provided. All the hints are seen outside the game area. The objects next to you are on the left-hand side. You can also see the icon of your character in this area, which lets you know the object closest to him. Oftentimes, clues are totally concealed.
You will discover secret items by cashing in one of the diamonds you pick up. There's a map to your right that shows you how many blue tiles are near each object in ascending order. This means that it counts from 0 to 3 blue tiles. Looking at the objects adjacent to you and how many tiles are near each object, you can work out which way is the best to go.
Castaway on Weird Island isn't as strange as it claims it is. The simplicity of the game makes it all themore enjoyable and addicting. There is no definitive conclusion to this puzzle. As long as you manage to solve the ship's location, you can progress to the next level. Castaway on a Weird Island may not be as immersive or graphically sophisticated as common survival games, but it is certainly a good way to practice your investigative and critical thinking skills.
