Christmas Otome is a donation-based visual novel game with gameplay elements woven into the choose-your-own narrative. It is a romance and adventure game that has over 130K words, a shop, a map, music, an opening video, three love interests and nine possible endings.
This choose your own adventure story is about a female character you can name. Similar to Yandere Simulator: Visual Novel and The Letter - Horror Visual Novel, the story is pretty linear, but you get to choose which direction the branching narrative goes. Small decisions such as what to order at a restaurant can alter how the game ends.
It works on a donation-based system. The developer, musician, video creator, artist, and writer put a lot of work into the visual novels. There are quite a few of them, and you are encouraged to make a nice donation as appreciation for all the work.
It is a later entry into the visual novel book series. It is left pretty open-ended given that there are nine possible endings, but it is definitely a game that fans of the series will find satisfying.
It could have gone all-in on the visual novel and had no gameplay. Or, it could have been a branching narrative anime game. Christmas Otome has just enough gameplay and enough options to be called a game, albeit a pick your own adventure game.
It is unfair to criticize this romance game for not being as polished as AA or AAA games. However, there are a few cases where it is obvious where art assets have been laid upon background images, such as how the items on shelves have different shading and light reflections to other things in a room.
