CutePDF Writer is intended to convert any type of printable document to PDF, which is probably the format most widely used for sharing a document. The application does not have a graphical user interface of its own because all it does is to install a virtual printer, which becomes accessible from the Print command of any other application that allows printing.
Although CutePDF Writer creates documents without noticeable distortions from the original file, it is quite a basic application and has very few features. For instance, it does not let you decide whether you want the new PDF in text or graphic format. In this respect, you cannot set the output resolution and thus control file size to your convenience. Likewise, this tool does not allow any kind of protection, which means that you cannot prevent copying or editing the output document by unauthorized users. Lastly, it does not let you edit any part of the document before printing it or creating fillable form fields.
In conclusion, there is nothing special about CutePDF Writer. In fact, there are lots of similar applications out there. There are even some tools that have powerful built-in PDF editors! The developer certainly offers other more powerful products of the same kind; yet, unlike CutePDF Writer, they come with a price tag. You should also take into account that for CutePDF Writer to work properly, you also need to install a PS2PDF converter.
