Keeping track of possible dupes will not only help you keep your file collection organized, but will also allow you to recover unnecessarily occupied disk space. Duplicate File Detective provides you with all the features you need to accomplish both objectives. Its multi-paneled interface and wizard-driven scan and clean processes make the entire search for duplicates a simple and rewarding task.
The first time you open Duplicate File Detective you may feel a bit overwhelmed by the amount of panels and information that the program’s interface shows. Filling in those panels with information is, however, a much more user-friendly operation. You will need to create a new project, which can be a Quick Search using the name, extension, and size of the files as filters; a Checksum or a Strong Checksum Search, in which contents is also taken into account; or a Duplicate Song Search, based on the tags of the audio files. Then you have to determine the search path(s) and the type of files you want the program to check for duplicates. In the Comparison Options section you can fine-tune how the file names, file extensions, file sizes, or date and time information will be checked.
You can also decide on what Hash types will be used to perform checksum searches using the program’s File Hash Calculator, as well as what information will be included in the subsequent Results Report.
Once you’re set, you can perform the search and wait for the program to display all relevant information in the multi-paneled main interface. Here is where you decide what to do with the duplicate files found, and where you can preview the files, see detailed information about them, their properties, know how much space they’re taking up, and modify the parameters of the search to fine-tune your results. You can also close those panels that you think you won’t need to make your decisions.
Duplicate File Detective comes with all the tools you need to locate and dispose any duplicate files that may be taking up much of your valuable disk space without you knowing about it. The program offers a wizard-driven search that makes it suitable for all types of users.
