Emit is a very nice solution for video streaming to your iOS or Android device. Emit consists of two different apps: a client and a server. The server is installed on your Mac (it is also available for Windows and Linux), and the client is installed on an iOS or Android device. The server app can be configured to stream the media that you have stored on your Mac to the iOS or Android device. I own an iPhone, so I used it to test the application. The server was installed on my Mac Mini running Lion.

Some of the most interesting features this application has to offer are multiple platforms support, SRT and MKV subtitle support, conversion of files for offline viewing and music transfer. There are many other features, but these ones are my favorite.

After downloading and installing both the client and the server apps, you can start streaming video out of the box. Emit will be able to stream any media file located in your Movies folder, but you can change this from the Preferences window, which you can access from the Menubar icon. From there, you can set a password, enable Internet connectivity (which lets you stream content from outside your home network) and change the port used.

In my testing, I was able to stream MKV files to my iPhone without any problems. The quality was astounding and I loved the way this app is easy to set up and use. The iPhone client detected the server running and listed available files instantly. I have to say that this is one of the best solutions for media streaming to iOS or Android devices that I have seen.
