Folder Size for Windows is a neat and handy extension for the Windows Explorer, meant to make it easy to see the sizes of folders and files from a selected directory.

Though until recently this tool only supported Windows XP and 2000, it has been upgraded to work on newer Windows operating systems. It acts very differently based on the Windows edition you’re using. On Windows 2000 and XP, Folder Size shows the sizes in a new column to the Details view in Windows Explorer. On Windows Vista, Windows 7, and Windows 8, the folder sizes are listed within a popup window displayed next to the Windows Explorer’s folder window. Since this popup window can often interfere with the usual display of windows on your desktop, a tray menu has been added to allow you to easily toggle off its display. Enabling the automatic launch of this tool with the Windows startup can also be done from this tray menu.

As you can see, Folder Size for Windows is a very simple utility that does nothing else but offer a quick and easy way to view the sizes of files of folders. It also comes with no additional options, settings, or features. Anyway, it’s quite handy, and it’s also completely free, so I’d say it’s worth a try. It worked flawlessly on my Windows 7 system, and it’s especially useful since even on this rather new edition of the Windows OS, the Windows Explorer still doesn’t display folder sizes by default.
