Extracts WAV or MP3 audio files from video formats: AVI, DivX, MP4, MOV, RM, MPEG, MKV, FLV, 3GP, MTS, WEBM, etc. Automatically watermarks the output files.

Extracting the audio stream of your favorite videos is the fastest and most convenient way of enjoying your favorite music also on devices without video support. Free Video to MP3 Converter extracts the audio stream of nearly any of your video files and saves it as an MP3, WAV, or WMA file in no time. Its support for batch extraction will let you transform your entire video collection into an audio collection in one single operation.

First things first – though technically a free tool and openly promoted as such by its developers, be advised that unless you upgrade to a so-called Premium version, the program will add audio watermarks to both the beginning and the end of your audio tracks. This Premium version doesn’t exist until you finish installing the program and launch it for the first time. Then is when you learn that “clearly free” means that your audio will be watermarked unless you pay an undetermined amount of money for an activation key. I didn’t go as far as to find out how much I had to pay to become Premium, but regardless of the price, if you’re asked to pay for removing limitations such as audio watermarks, permanent on-screen ads, lower speed and lower quality, and second-class tech support, you haven’t installed a fully-functional free tool, but a trial version of the real thing.

Having said that, Free Video to MP3 Converter opens in a clean and attractive interface, where you can select as many video files as you wish for the audio extraction process. The list of formats supported for the input is fairly impressive, and it covers all the most common video file formats, such as MPEG, MP4, AVI, DivX, MOV, M2TS, 3GP, MKV, WebM, or QuickTime, among others. As for the output, MP3 is the preferred format, and the only one that offers some customization. You can choose among half a dozen of MP3 quality profiles, from “Lame Insane” to mono “Audio book”, while WAV and WMA files (the other two output formats supported) come in one flavor only.

The conversion process itself is anything but slow, but the promise of a faster speed and a better quality if you buy a Premium key makes you see it as simply adequate. The program lacks a media player where to preview your videos, comes with no editing features whatsoever, and does not support multiple output audio extraction. To me, however, the biggest drawback of all remains the audio watermarking, a feature that shouldn’t be part of any true free app.
