Gaupol is a comprehensive movie subtitle editor/creator with many useful features. It was originally designed for Linux/Unix systems, but it has a Windows version too (0.19.1). It supports all popular subtitle formats and character encodings, and it can convert subtitle files between formats. Regrettably, the speech recognition functionality available in the Linux versions has not been included in the Windows installer.

The program user interface is very clear and simple. You can open an existing subtitle file or create a new project, where you will insert your own subtitle strings manually, defining their order, the initial and final time, their duration, and the text itself. You can also edit the current file very easily - delete one or multiple subtitles, insert any number of text strings after or before the current one, etc. Once your job is finished, you can save it into any of the supported output formats and character encodings.

But the program also includes a number of additional helpful tools, all related to subtitle editing. For example, the "Check spelling" command identifies misspelled words quickly while suggesting alternative spellings. To configure this function you are asked to select the language of your subtitles (English, French, and German are the ones supported). You can also fine-tune your subtitle texts automatically using up to five practical features - Remove hearing impaired texts, Join or split words, Correct common errors, Capitalize texts, and Break lines.

Another very interesting function of this program is "Adjust Durations". It allows you to change the duration of the subtitles selected based on an average reading speed set by you. You can also define minimum and maximum durations, and a gap between subtitles. You can apply this change to a set of subtitles, to all the subtitles in the current project, and even to all the subtitles in all the open projects. As you can see, the program allows you to work on multiple projects simultaneously, and there are many features that you can apply to all open projects simultaneously. Thus, we could say that this program somehow supports “batch processing”.

To sum up, Gaupol is a very comprehensive subtitle editor which will surely fulfill all your expectations, even if you are a professional video editor.
