gedit is a simple, open-source notepad application. It is also the official text editor of the GNOME desktop environment.

Compared to other free text editors such as Notepad++, gedit looks lighter and less feature-rich. It is indeed focused on simplicity, straightforwardness and ease of use. Anyway, additional functions that make this tool suitable for editing codes, various kinds of scripts and languages are also available, such as syntax highlighting or a handy search-and-replace tool. The functionality of this program can be extended with the help of the available plug-ins. There are plug-ins that allow adding bookmarking functionality, code commenting possibilities, session saving and word completing features, and many more. A handy spell checker is also installed by default.

Even enhanced with various plug-ins, gedit doesn’t get to be as powerful and comprehensive as, for example, Notepad++, but it is definitely handier than the default Windows’ Notepad. It’s lightweight, simple and versatile, capable of being a great solution for any text/code/script editing needs.
