GetDataBack Simple is intended for file recovery and backup. The tool supports multiple types of devices, like hard disks, solid-state disks, memory cards and USB sticks. Likewise, it works with various file systems, including NTFS, FAT12, FAT16, FAT32, exFAT, EXT, EXT2, EXT3, EXT4 and HFS+, which makes it appropriate to rescue data from partitions other than those specifically formatted for Windows. It works on extreme data loss scenarios, like damaged or lost partition tables, boot records and root directories as well as drive reformatting and partitioning.

The program’s workflow is based on a series of wizards. During the process, big tile-like buttons come and go depending on the current operation. Unfortunately, I find the interface quite plain, and probably it needs a layout redesign in terms of using the available window space better.

To discover logical drives, you first need to choose one of the available physical disks. The next step is to select one of the drives, of course. Then, the program scans it and provides you with a list of all the files there, which is done much faster than by other similar software. The results include not only existing but also lost and duplicate files as well. It is great that the tool can accurately reconstruct directory structure. At this point, the program lets you examine file contents using a hexadecimal viewer. Then, it is possible to copy or open the selected files right from the program’s window.

According to its developers, the tool’s high level of effectiveness is due to the powerful technology running under the hood, based on the use of various approaches. The program also has the advantage of recovering data from drives Windows cannot longer recognize. In most severe cases, as when the computer cannot start, the tool can be used from the Runtime Live CD or a WinPE Boot Medium. Likewise, it is good that no actual changes are made to the original files as the program works in read-only mode. Finally, it is a good idea to choose a more proactive approach and use the program to create a backup image of a complete drive.

All in all, GetDataBack Simple works just as described by its vendors. Since there are so many similar programs out there, it is a good idea to try a few and decide which one works best for you before spending any money. The product has other versions: GetDataBack Classic, GetDataBack for NTFS and GetDataBack for FAT.
