Digital adaptation of the popular dungeon crawler

Gloomhaven is the digital version of the cooperative board game designed by Isaac Childres. It provides players with the same campaign-based dungeon crawler gameplay that the physical version offers. However, it reduces the process of organizing decks, tokens, and tiles to a short wait of loading.

More than simplifying the process of setting up the game, this version of Gloomhaven also offers something new for fans. It comes with a single-player adventure mode that uses procedural generation like a roguelike to create encounters. Although, despite its ominous atmosphere, you will find that the visuals aren't that striking.

What does the game offer?

Gloomhaven offers the same gameplay as its physical counterpart. However, as mentioned, this PC port reduces the preparation process of organizing the decks, tokens, and tiles. You only need to wait for the game to load. More than that, controlling multiple characters is also greatly streamlined. You can flip between party members and examine their action cards with ease. Additionally, it handles antagonist activation in the background, saving more time.

Of course, the game retained the original material of the physical version. You can still modify the cards through enhancements and unlock all of the various classes. You can also accomplish achievements, which virtually sticker the digital board. Even better, this version has a great soundtrack and voice acting that adds to the experience. Moreover, each dungeon has a useful descriptor to keep track of the narrative.

Although, players will find that the visuals of the game aren't particularly striking. But, they do create an oppressive atmosphere. Additionally, the PC version cannot capture the anguish and mental anxiety of the physical version. Nevertheless, it captured the essence of the game. Moreover, the automation takes solo mode from boring to a legitimate way of enjoying the game since you can play a single-player adventure mode.

Should you play it?

Overall, Gloomhaven is an impressive digital iteration of the physical dungeon game. It features the same exciting gameplay made easy to follow by the description and explanation given. Moreover, it streamlined the process of getting started with the game. Solo players will also find the experience more enjoyable as the game provides procedurally generated encounters in the dungeons. Although, it takes some time to get used to the UI.
