Icon2Image is a small Mac application that provides you with a very simple way to create icons from any file that you might store on your system. Not only that, but with the help of this easy-to-use tool you can even create icons of the contents of image files or even make images from ICNS files in no time.

After launching Icon2Image, it will be placed on your Menu Bar from where you can easily make icons in various ways with just a click of a mouse. In order to do that, you will have to select the source file (or files) and select one of the available options. You can choose to make icons for files or media, copy the icons of files or add shortcut or custom icons with little effort.

If you feel that there are too many options available after clicking on the Menu Bar icon of Icon2Image, you can easily remove the unnecessary ones by accessing the "Preferences" menu. You can also change the background image color and opacity and you can set the quality and size of the output in an intuitive manner.

Finally, if you are in need of a handy Mac application that allows you to create icons from any kind of a file in a very simple way, then you might want to try Icon2Image.

v1.3 [Jun 2, 2011]
Icon2Image is now only available as one self contained menu bar app, and the contextual menu and system preference pane have been retired. Minimum system requirement is 10.6.6.
The preferences have been organized into three panes: Menu, Imaging and Saving accoridng to their functionality. All items have tool tips for help. Some items have been renamed for clarity.
The background color now has an associated transparency control (alpha.) This value is set from a slider on the "Imaging" pane of the preferences window. "1" is opaque (fully colored) background, and "0" is fully transparent (clear) background. The defualt background color is white.
Some imaging techniques have been changed for improved results.
The app now support ouput of images of icons up to 512x512, rather than 128x128.
The default output folder is placed in the "icon2Image" folder of the Limit Point Software folder of Application Support, to conform to Apple's rules on using the file system. But, use preference to set the location to any folder you like.
Management of the various options available in Preferences has been simplified by moving the Preferences pane out of System Preferences and into the menu bar application itself. This simplifies both installation and access of preferences for icon2Image.
The documentation has not yet beenupdated for these changes to the app, but changes are not so drastic that old documentation, and images, can't be used.
