InspectPNG is exactly what its name implies: an application that helps you examine PNG files. This program gives you access to detailed information regarding any PNG file you select from your local directories, like width and height, last modification time, physical pixel dimensions, and many others.
Unfortunately, Mac's default image viewer doesn't offer you much information regarding PNG images. For this reason, programs like InspectPNG were created. All you need to do is import the PNG file you wish to examine and the application will instantly offer you the info you require.
The newest version of this utility provides you with extra features, like support for CgBI chunk (Apple's proprietary extension to PNG), tIME (Last-modification time), bKGD chunk (default background color to present the photo against), and sBIT (Significant Bits). In addition, the application also gives you access to a description of what each chunk does, a feature that comes in handy to users with minimum graphic design experience.
My only issue with this program is the fact that it doesn't provide you with an integrated search tool. Sometimes, it offers an enormous file report and it's pretty difficult to locate the exact information you're looking for by just scrolling down the main window.
Nonetheless, it's worth installing and working with this application if you ever need to find out detailed information regarding a PNG file. Plus, it's free of charge.
