MacX Free iPad Ripper for Mac is a free DVD ripper. You can use this app to convert your DVD movies into video files that you can play on your iPad and other Apple devices. The application converts the DVDs to the MPEG-4 and H.264 formats, which are very popular on mobile devices.
Graphically, the application looks kind of old. The user interface has been transfered from the Windows version, which looks OK on Windows, but not so much on Mac. Still, anyone who has used a video converter before will feel right at home, because all of the buttons and the settings are there in a single window. At the bottom of the screen there are the conversion settings. You can choose among a variety of conversion profiles, both for the iPad and various models of the iPhone. There is a video player for quick video playback as well.
Although there isn't a video editor, you can manually trim your DVD movies by typing in the times at which you want to trim it. This feature works well. There is also support for subtitles, but the rendering engine is not the best and, at least in my case, the subtitles looked transparent, with a white lining.
I had no problems converting DVD movies, other than the noted problem with subtitles. The process was quick and on par with other solutions in terms of speed.
