This tool, mkv2vob, helps you transcode MKV (Matroska) files to VOB, so that they can be readily played on PlayStation 3. MKV is a container format, and as such, it can store various video and audio tracks as well as subtitles in different languages. In this respect, it is excellent that, together with the container switching process, it also lets you pick the desired target codec. Likewise, you can choose the preferred language both for audio and subtitles. Moreover, in the case of subtitles, it is possible to load them from an external file.
Regrettably, the tool’s interface looks extremely outdated. What is worse, it does not even look like a macOS application. However, it is easy to navigate thanks to the availability of three tabs. The first tab lets you add a separate video file while the second is intended for batch conversion by adding an entire directory. Again, it is unfortunate that it makes browsing for the desired files or folders extremely difficult as it does not use the standard folder structure. The third tab allows configuring various output parameters, like codec, subtitles and audio track. In this regard, it is even possible to split the resulting video in various files of the desired size.
All in all, mkv2vob meets a very specific format conversion need. This is probably not the best choice if you are looking for a video converter. In the first place, it has an extremely narrow range of input and output formats. On top of that, the tool is not very fast. However, this does not mean it cannot come in handy at times, and, fortunately, it is free to use.
