mkvWatch is a commercial video converter for the Mac. It is an app that can be used to convert MKV files to other formats that can be opened on more devices. MKV is an excellent format. But it isn't supported by devices like the iPhone, iPod, Apple TV or even gaming consoles like the PS3. Most TV sets can play the format these days, but older ones can't. The developers of this app tried to make it as easy as possible to convert the format. Thus, they opted for a drag-and-drop interface where you can simply drop your MKV files and choose what device you want to play the format on. The available options are AppleTV, iPad, iPhone, iPod, Playstation 3, and Bravia TVs. The application will convert the files to MP4.
In my testing, I found that not all the MKV files that I used could be converted. The first two failed. And when I opened the log, I really couldn't make heads or tails of it. The third file that I tried converted well, and the process was fast. The clip looked and sounded great.
At $9.99, this isn't an expensive app, but there are free solutions that can deal with the conversion of MKV files. If it had worked for all my files, I would really consider to buy it, especially because of how easy it is to use.
