MPLAB X Integrated Development Environment (IDE) can be used to develop and debug embedded programs Microchip’s microcontrollers and digital signal controllers. It provides a variety of features to help you quickly debug your projects and minimize development time. Its Data Visualizer gives you real-time streaming data from the hardware. You can also debug your programs using real-time I/O pin states.

- New Project format – Projects created in or updated to v5.00 are not backward compatible! However, there is a plugin you can use to revert projects (Tools>Plugins>Available Plugins>Save As v4.xx Project).
MPLAB X IDE projects now support packs, found under \v5.00\packs. Packs contain versioned device information.

- Support for Atmel-ICE (EDBG) – Atmel embedded debugger (EDBG) support using Atmel-ICE.
