openCanvas is a software utility intended to edit images and create artwork. It is loaded with tools that, together with your artistic skills, let you produce excellent results. Its interface is not too different from those of other similar programs. So much so, that there is not much to learn to start to use, at least, its basic features.
The workspace is composed of a series of independent windows that float over the desktop. Thus, it is easy to arrange the workspace for your convenience, and the resulting layouts can be saved or loaded according to your purposes. An important element in the workspace is naturally the canvas or drawing region. Since you can open various canvases, it is possible to work on various projects simultaneously.
The program supports such common image formats as JPG, BMP, and PNG. Likewise, it is compatible with other file types, like OCI, WPB, and PSD, which allows sharing your project with users of other painting software. Regrettably, though, the program does not support as many formats as other available utilities.
Fortunately, openCanvas lets you work with various layers, which can be grouped into layer sets. To get the expected results, you can also create layer masks and delete only a part of the image, for example. In addition, you can use the tools that are common to all painting software, including pencil, airbrush, watercolor, eyedropper and magic wand. Most of them are highly customizable, and you can set size, opacity, pressure, and hardness. I especially liked the possibility of setting a stabilizing level for my brush strokes.
The program comes with a unique feature, which its developers have named “Event”, intended to record or replay the process of creating your painting. This can help you share the artistic process with others. Yet, the program does not allow sharing projects on the cloud, something that would favor teamwork.
All in all, openCanvas is certainly a good choice for those willing to create their own illustrations, as it is both powerful and easy to use. However, since it is so similar to other software of its type, it would be a good idea to take a look at some of the programs available out there. By the way, the product can be tried for a generous period of time.
