Pocket Crystal League is a free-to-play digital collectible card game based on the Pokémon Trading Card Game. Created by indie developer moodytail, this Poké-card title takes players on a journey through the Kyoumu region, where they must face Gym Leaders from the eight major cities to compete in the ultimate battle arena, the Crystal League.

Throughout your adventure, you can expand your deck, boost your cards, and battle with other trainers. Partly inspired by Inscryption, PCL’s gameplay mechanics are easy to follow. Community-made mods and expansion packs are available, too, providing fresh content and additional features to the base game.

All roads lead to the Crystal League

In Pocket Crystal League, you play as a Pokémon trainer on the road to the Crystal League. With a starter deck, you have to travel across the Kyoumu region,battling every Gym Leader in the eight major cities to qualify in the league. As you collect badges along the way, you can build your deck, have your creatures gain new abilities, and battle against other aspiring champions.

As mentioned, the gameplay mechanics are a no-brainer. If you’re familiar with deck-building and card battle games, you won’t have a hard time crafting a winning deck and dominating battle arenas. The cards include Pokémons from Generations I-IV with their corresponding Fairy Types, illustrated in pixel art style. This means you can get the chance to become a league champ with the iconic trio: Bulbasaur, Charmeleon, and Squirtle.

For more content and features, you can explore various mods and expansion packs designed by the community. Although, you can already consider some of those as alternate versions of the base game. In terms of game balance, beginners can be in a tight spot, despite the straightforward mechanics. Not for the faint-hearted

At first glance, it is tempting to assume that Pocket Crystal League is an easy play, considering its Game Boy-like presentation. Only the inexperienced would fall into that trap because, in reality, the journey to the Crystal League is brimming with challenges that will catch even veterans by surprise. In other words, only the gutsy deserve a spot in the league with their favorite Pokémons from the first four generations.
