Road 96 is a paid adventure game from Digixart Entertainment. In this simulation experience driven by story and player decisions, you play as a hitchhiker trying to escape the authoritarian nation of Petria. With every stopover comes a new decision and a new opportunity to meet new characters, each branching out to create a unique story for each gameplay.
In terms of its visuals, its calming atmosphere, great music, and unexpected twists, Road 96 has few parallels in the video game market, making it a cross like Firewatch and Halloween After Special, and a unique experience altogether like the first two.
Crazy is one way to describe Road 96, a procedural game where the next events are both generated by chance and choice. While there are a fixed number of endings, there are virtually endless ways to build a story to get there. As you hitchhike, you find unique characters: each with their own stories, backgrounds, and interaction options. You can be safely transported to the next stop or be killed.
Its graphics are top-tier–clear, colorful, and responsive to the environment. It has no dull moments as the graphics quality drives gameplay from traveling the roads to various activities you have during the stopovers. Aside from its visual style, the game also employs nostalgic 90s music that completes the feel of being back in 1996, which is the game’s setting. This combination of audio and video makes the game even more enjoyable.
Since it has thousands of story elements that can be mixed and matched, it’s not surprising that there are a few storylines that are not well developed. For example, the heavy premise that Petria is a totalitarian state doesn’t factor much into the story. Other than that, its stories range from dark to comedic, and it's your decisions that will uncover them all.
Road 96 is addictive in the sense that most of its characters create an immersive experience, making you want to unlock all other possibilities and interactions. Sure, not every storyline is created equal but with great graphics, equally great music, and a range of activities for you to discover, this game is truly a unique experience. With every playthrough a different story, this is a game you can’t miss.
