SmartSleep is a nice app for users of Mac notebooks. It allows you to control the different states of sleep that your Mac can go into, and it allows you to quickly hibernate your Macbook and then go back to it the way you left it. I was a big fan of the hibernation feature on Windows, but I didn't find it anywhere when I switched to Mac. I mean, the Macbook Pro can hibernate, it is just hard to force it into hibernation. You have to get into the Terminal and do some stuff there. Another reason why I would use SmartSleep is because of its Insomnia plug-in. What Insomnia does is prevents the Macbook from sleeping or hibernating when you close the lid of your Mac. I used an app called InsomniaX before doing this, but it doesn't work any more. Check on the developer's website to see the full list of features and customization options.
Unfortunately, in my testing, I wasn't able to get SmartSleep to work. When I launched, and then updated the application, all the options in the Preferences window were disabled. I couldn't do anything. I saw the menus in the MenuBar, but all I could do from there was send my Mac to the various sleep states available. I saw no button to check the Insomnia feature. I was really bummed when this didn't work, because I was really looking forward to using this app.
