Revamped version of a classic old game

Anyone who was alive during the age of old Nokia phones will fondly remember the classic game Snake that came built-in with the units, usually along with Space Impact and Bantum among others. Snake Munch is an arcade game developed by Fingerspoil Games, and it’s pretty much exactly the same as the classic game but with improved graphics and more complicated challenges for the player. Does this simple game hold-up throughout the years, and are the new improvements enough to make it more enjoyable?

Old and New Mechanics

As mentioned above, Snake Munch is really not that different from the old Snake game in terms of mechanics. If you’re a fan of the original, then the old mechanics need no explanation. But for those who are not familiar with them, here’s a refresher. Your objective in this game is tofeed the snake with fruits that appear throughout the map. The snake gets longer and longer as you continue to eat more fruits. If you hit the wall or your own tail, you lose a life, or in some extreme circumstances, get a game over.

All of those mechanics were retained in Snake Munch, but it does add new mechanics to make the game more interesting. For example, you can choose among four snakes that have different properties. One snake moves in a straight line while another move in a wavy line. Fruits are also not the only thing that becomes available on the map. You can get 1-UPs and other goodies that can help you throughout the game. Unlike in the classic game, Snake Munch works in levels with each level having a set number of fruits that you need to eat. As you progress through the levels, the maps also get harder as more obstacles are added.

Presentation and Aesthetics

Snake Munch is presentedin 3D, but the view is consistently top-down, so it’s not confusing to play. One negative thing about Snake Munch is its color aesthetics. Therearea lot of clashing, saturated colors that can make it very straining to the eye when looked at for a long period of time. It can also be difficult to see fruits sometimes because they tend to blend with the background too much.

That said, the controls are very responsive. There are no lags or delays even when you’re working with a pretty long snake. It does take a bit of getting used to, but once you’ve discovered how things worked, it’s not that complicated to get into it.

Nostalgia Bomb for old Snake Lovers

If you’re looking for a way to relive the fun of playing the old Snake then Snake Munch is a good game. It’s simple and sticks true to the old classic, but it also has new mechanics and challenges that give it its very own personality and flair. This is the kind of game that’s enjoyable no matter how many years pass, and Snake Munch gives it a much need it upgrade from its classic roots.
