With an even more accurate frame-based cutting point selection, batch processing, subtitle support, and the option to merge video fragments into a larger file, SolveigMM Video Splitter Home Edition is pretty much like SolveigMM AVI Splitter+ on steroids. It works equally seamlessly with MPEG audio files, too, and its visual timeline makes it highly intuitive and user-friendly.

Actually, just like AVI Splitter+, this app is based on SolveigMM’s Video Editing SDK, a video editing engine with a more extensive functionality. Apart from the wider set of features that Video Spitter offers, it is the frame-based cutting point selection that makes this tool much more interesting. Unlike the key-frame selection that we find in AVI Splitter+, which moves the pointer to the nearest key frame (thus adding extra frames to our selection), Video Splitter is capable of extracting just the frames you’re interested in. This translates into far more accurate selections and in shorter cutting times.

You can select as many fragments as desired, and cut them all out in one single operation. Alternatively, you can invert your selection at any time to preserve the fragments you selected and leave out the rest. You can also apply the same cutting points to various video files in one single operation. The program’s video slicing tool will also let you split your files into equal parts or into sections with the same duration or size.

Merging video files is also possible, but only when the videos involved share the exactly same specifications. To preserve the original video quality intact, this app comes with no re-encoding or transcoding capabilities, which means that no conversion between formats is possible, which makes merging non-identical files simply impossible. Thus, this merging utility comes in very handy when you wish to put back together fragments from the same original video file. Combining these two functions wisely will save you lots of editing time, as you can first take out all unwanted sections at once and then put the rest back together in one simple merging operation.

SolveigMM Video Splitter Home Edition comes with a graphical timeline that will help you perform all your edits in the most intuitive way. Video files are displayed as a series of thumbnails of selected frames, while audio files appear as waveform graphs for an easier cutting point selection. Though basically limited to cutting and merging video and audio files (a limitation in functionality that not only makes the app to be a bit on the pricey side but that also diminishes its appeal), its user-friendliness and its preservation of the original quality make it a tool – at least – worth trying.
