Remastered, upgraded RTS classic

StarCraft®: Remastered is an upgrade of a beloved simulation game, available to play for free. Aside from the remastered graphics, this real-time strategy version comes with a couple of all-new features such as an observer mode and connecting to the Blizzard app. Revisit the classic story or go on skirmishes as you play as one of three races across the galaxy.

Now redesigned for 4K graphics and 16:9 aspect ratio displays, StarCraft®: Remastered is the perfect excuse to relive the classic RTS experience. Similarly, you might want to check out Day of the Tentacle and Shadow Complex—both remastered games.

Return to the Koprulu Sector

It’s important to note that StarCraft®: Remastered comes in a free and a paid version, with the free one offering more than enough content to get you started. However, there are certain restrictions such asremastered audio quality, 4K graphics availability, and additional language support. Still, if you’re looking to only relive the original experience, the free version should suffice.

For the story, the game faithfully recreates all campaign materials from both the base game and its expansion, Brood War. You get to meet legendary figures such as Sarah Kerrigan, High Templar Tassadar, or even the subject of pop culture references like Tarrasque. For players who started with StarCraft II, it’s a great opportunity to see how vital events in the game came to be.

For this version of StarCraft, you can freely switch between versions: the remastered and the original 1998 visuals. There are no gameplay changes, unfortunately, although the bugs and glitches that once added challenge to the early multiplayer games appear to have been fixed. Also, all the cheat codes from the original game are still working—although they are all also disabled for multiplayer games.

Classic RTS, updated engines

StarCraft®: Remastered is one of the best examples of the good that comes from remastering classics. The original 1998 game was well-received, and recreating all of its content—including the Easter eggs and the cheat codes—is a great way to let a new generation of gamers experience this classic. There are a number of restrictions for the free version though but it’s already a good start.
