TaskBadges is a Menu Bar application that shows you the number of tasks you need to finish from a to-do list within your Mac. This program uses an algorithm to count the incomplete assignments from your plain-text files and displays those numbers over the icons of the documents containing those to-do lists.

All you need to do to enable the app to monitor the plain-text files (containing to-do lists) is to drag-and-drop them over the main window of TaskBadges. These documents are also visible and can be launched from the main menu of the app (located on the Menu Bar).

You can use Mac's TextEdit app to create task files. It's imperative to write one assignment per row with "[ ]" in front of each task. You can mark the chores as completed by entering an x between the brackets and the app should recognize the assignments as finished and update the file's icon.

However, the program brings two flaws: it doesn't let you set a global hotkey to immediately reveal its main window and it sometimes fails to update the number of open tasks on the file's icon.

To conclude, I'd say it's not worth trying this application. I can't find any reason why you should install this program on your Mac since it fails to complete its only goal: to show you the correct amount of tasks you need to finish from a certain to-do list.
