Formerly known as Jing, TechSmith Capture is a small utility to grab screenshots and entire videos in a simple and straightforward way, enhance them with basic editing features, and share them directly to Screencast and Knowmia. Though it shares features and capabilities with Snagit, TechSmith Capture could be considered a lite version of this other TechSmith tool.

Recording and sharing tutorials, presentations, and other video captures of whatever is happening on your screen has become more and more common. At some point, we all may need or simply want to share with friends, family, or co-workers what we do best, but not all of us are savvy enough to use complicated screen recording tools to perform that task. That is what probably TechSmith had in mind when developing Capture.

It just couldn't be simpler than this. Once launched, you only need to press Shift+F11 (or another key combination of your choice) to start capturing your screen activity. Select an area or the entire screen and take a screenshot or start recording using your webcam. Screenshots can be enhanced by adding arrows, callouts, shapes, or by highlighting certain objects or texts in the image. You can then save the results in any of the common image file formats supported.

As for videos, you can also select a specific area (top-left, top-right, etc.) or the entire screen. While Snagit allows you to add a live video of yourself by selecting the picture-in-picture option, Capture does not, regrettably. All you can do with this simple, easy-to-use, and free tool is to select the area and start recording. No editing, no video effects, no scrolling.

That does not detract from the merits of this tool—easy and simple screen recording and screenshots free for everyone. If all you ask from a tool like this is to do the work efficiently and without hassle, TechSmith Capture is a serious option to consider. It won't take up your system's resources, and it can be set to stay quietly in the background waiting for your next screenshot or tutorial.
