The Othello is a tragic play by William Shakespeare that is set during the Ottoman-Venetian War. From 1489 to 1571, Cyprus was a possession of the Venetian Republic, but in 1571 the city of Famagusta fell to the Ottomans. In this scene, Othello is a prisoner of war in an Italian castle and is trying to escape from his captors.
