VPN Shield promises to let you surf the web anonymously through a VPN connection. In this respect, the application is actually a client that allows you to connect to various VPN services. It has a straightforward interface; although it is definitely not as easy to use as other similar tools that can get you connected with a single click.
VPN Shield app runs from the Menu Bar, from where you can start the VPN connection. It lets you use the VPN Shield service and pick your desired country. Unfortunately, their network is not very wide as only ten countries are supported. To make it worse, they are not well distributed along the globe. However, VPN Shield is not the only service of this type supported by the app, as it also allows connecting to Global VPN and HideMyAss.
Let us look at some of the benefits we can get from using VPN Shield as a service. Unluckily, not much technical information about this service is available. However, it is good that they claim to use traffic compression to reduce the amount of traffic. Likewise, their connection speeds are fairly decent.
In terms of security, the app supports two VPN types (IPSec, L2TP) which also depend on the VPN service you are connecting to. Apparently, it does not support OpenVPN protocol, though. It is good that the application can start a protected connection automatically when you are using an insecure network, such as public Wi-Fi hotspots. Likewise, it can reconnect without your intervention in case the VPN connection is dropped. Yet, it seems not to come with a killswitch to prevent data leaks. As to privacy, the company promises to protect your personal data, but they admit they do keep logs of certain aspects as bandwidth usage and session times.
All in all, VPN Shield is easy to use and provides you with access to various VPN services. The client is actually free to download and use; however, there are costs involved as you need to pay for the services provided.
