v6.5 [Dec 9, 2010]
New features, improvements and fixes:
- Tutorial revised: The Getting Started tutorial has been revised. A PDF User Guide based on it has also been released at http://file.whizfolders.com/whizfoldersguide.pdf.
- New behavior of Move Up button: Previously the Move Up button moved a topic up through its immediate adjacent topics, causing a change in its level. Now it moves above the next sibling so that the level remains unchanged. If you don’t want this and want the old behavior, you can Revert to old behavior by an option in the Settings–Miscellaneous 2.
- New, smart quotes “always on” option: In a previous blog article, I described how to switch on smart quotes by Ctrl-Shift-quote keys. This is a feature of Microsoft RichEdit that WhizFolders uses. In this version, we have given this option on the Settings–Editor page. This makes it easier to keep smart quotes on if you use that feature frequently. We have fixed the problem in pre-release that occurred on non-US keyboards.
- New, Zoom choices changed: The zoom choices at the bottom right have been changed. For example, a 110% is also available now.
- New, warning on closing multiple tabs: If you close the WhizFolder window when multiple tabs are open, it now gives a warning to prevent accidental closing by a wrong click. This can be switched off on Settings–Confirmations.
- New, select all hits from Search tab on the right: When you get search results, just right click on the menu operation “Select All these Topics” and they will be selected in the topic list. Then you can do other operations on those topics, such as, print them, export them or copy them to another document. The search now also displays external names of the topics instead of their internal names.
- New option in advanced sort: A new option on the Advanced Sort dialog allows you to sort only the top level topics, leaving the subordinate topics untouched.
- New, easier assign icons: The feature to assign icons to topic names has been improved. Now when you select a topic, its assigned icon is shown on the drop down. This helps you find exactly what icon number you have assigned to it. Moreover, now you can assign a new icon by simply typing its number and hitting Enter instead of clicking on the drop down. This helps in assigning a particular icon repeatedly.
- New Toolbars: WhizFolders Toolbars have improved. It starts with a Beginner’s Toolbar that is much improved in looks as well as in grouping of operations.
- Improved, picture insertion: The picture pasting is now unaffected by the changes in registry by graphics programs for the bitmap area.
- Improved speed of move button operations: The move buttons sometimes didn’t respond to successive clicks to rapidly move the topics in the topic list. This has now been improved, allowing a rapid movement.
- Improved, search word containing special characters: Now if you type a word containing special characters, Search automatically encloses it in double-quotes to specify exact search. But to search for a phrase, you still need to enclose it in double quotes to specify exact search. Otherwise, search takes it as a multiple word search.
- Improved, history of find, replace, search strings: Find, replace, search operations now show more items in its history pull down along with a scroll bar.
- Improved, compact confirmation messages put off: Compact operation gave a status message box for the completion. This has been removed based on user feedback. Confirmation asking for compacting has also been removed in case of Windows Shutdown.
- Improved, speed of selecting children: Some operations asked to select children but then were slow in selecting those child topics. This speed has been improved.
- Fixed, Changed Notes compare screen: In Changed Notes viewing application, the Before and After labels for replaced topic text was reversed. Fixed.
- Fixed, delete topic problems: On some systems, file permission problems caused the Changed Notes database to give error and this prevented the delete topic operation from being executed in those cases. Now, on such problems, the delete operation can continue.
- Fixed, move down change: A new bug related to the move down button came up due to recent changes in the last pre-release version. This has been fixed.
- Fixed, open containing folder on XP: Main document list’s Open Containing Folder feature didn’t work on Windows XP. Fixed.
- Fixed, indented printing bugs: The new feature of Indented printing, introduced in version 6.5, sometimes didn’t continue properly on new pages. Fixed.
- Fixed, Add keywords bugs: Many bugs were fixed related to add keywords feature that sometimes caused an error message.
- Fixed, topic display problems: Sometimes, wrong internal format in jump links caused a topic to appear with internal RTF code in the viewer. It worked OK in editor though. Fixed.
- Fixed, Installation bugs: Sometimes, the 6.5 version installer could not detect an already running, earlier version of WhizFolders and hence, could not give a proper message to stop the program. This resulted in incomplete installation. Fixed.
- Fixed, group file location remembering: The file open dialog for a documents group file didn’t remember the last folder used. This is now fixed.
- Fixed, printing bug: The option “don’t number topic names in TOC” sometimes caused Table of Contents to be printed with some strange characters. Fixed.
- Fixed, all hidden topic related operations (deluxe edition): The deluxe edition has a feature for hiding topics (or hoisting that also uses hidden topics). Earlier, many operations didn’t ignore the hidden topics causing some confusion. All such operations are now fixed to ignore hidden topics. Moreover, the selection does not remain on hidden topics now so that operations on selected topics do not work on hidden topics.
- Fixed, getkeywords error in search: A double-colon occurring in the topic name caused search to abort with a getkeywords call error. Fixed.
- Fixed the effect of some options on the topic list: The following options didn’t affect the topic list, mostly in the off state. They have been fixed.
- Settings, misc–Insert Relative Paths in JumpFile links: When file links were dropped on the topic list from explorer, it always inserted relative paths even if this flag was switched off. Fixed. But since the default was ON (more useful state), this bug was not reported by any user.
- Settings, misc–Use only the file name as topic name when inserting text files as topics: When switched off, this didn’t insert full file paths. Fixed. But since the default was ON (more useful state), this bug was not reported by any user.
- Settings, misc–Show the internal topic names, exactly as they are: This option didn’t work. Fixed. But since the default was OFF (more useful state), this bug was not reported by any user.
- Edit–Insert–Use Long Date Format: This option didn’t work on F4 or F5 when pressed in the topic list during a name editing operation. Fixed.
- Fixed, Errors on Add Keywords: All Add Keywords related errors have been fixed.
- New program and document icons: there are new, better looking icons for WhizFolders and WhizFolder documents. At the same time, the color of the old icon has been retained so that the new icon is easier to identify.
- Icons for topic names: You can now assign a custom icon to any topic name in the topic list. Just use the new Icon drop down that you see on the toolbar or on the right-click menu. You can even select multiple topics and assign them new icons.
- Pinnable Keywords and Search panes: If you see the Keywords and Search panes on the right, you will see a new “Pin” button at the top. Click it and the panes should stay instead of hiding when not in use. This helps when you are going through several search results or keywords and want to remember your place in there.
- New “Invert Selection” operation: You might have noticed that some operations select multiple topics for you. For example, you can select a keyword in the right pane and right-click on “Select All Assigned Topics.” This selects all the topics assigned to that keyword so that you can then do other operations on them, for example, print selected topics or move them to a new place or document. Similar selection can be done for “check marked” lists by the right-click menu “Select only the ticked topics.”
- Group Files can be opened from Explorer: If you have created document group files by using the File menu’s corresponding operations then there is a big improvement. Earlier, you could only open a group file from the File menu of WhizFolders. But now, you can open them from Windows Explorer or can create shortcuts for them on the desktop to open different group of documents at different times.
- Back button improved: The Blue Back button on the toolbar now allows you to go back to the recent topics that you have visited in order. Earlier, the back button only worked to go back from hyperlinks. This feature will be further improved in future versions to show a list of recent topics that you visited.
- Smart Installation: When installed on a fresh system, both pro and deluxe editions use the same file name whizfolders.exe. This makes it easier to install a new edition without requiring to uninstall the earlier one. For example, if you use the pro edition and upgrade to the deluxe, you don’t need to uninstall the pro edition separately. It is automatically replaced by the Deluxe edition installer. At the same time, if you already have old Pro or Deluxe edition installed with earlier file name, the installer continues to use the old file name for replacement. Considerable effort has gone into this so that the installation is simpler for new buyers. At the same time, old users are not affected with existing installations.
- Other minor improvements and fixes:
- On the advanced editor, you will now see a Close Topic button on the top right that allows you to quickly close the current topic.
- When a keyword was used in the Keywords pane and it was assigned to multiple topics, a list of topics is presented. Earlier, the order of the topics in this list was not the same as in the original topic list. This has been fixed.
- Keyword assignments has been improved to correctly retain the list of recently assigned keywords for that document that is shown on the Add Keywords screen.
- When “Copy link to this topic” operation was done in the Advanced Editor it gave a wrong message. Fixed.
- When Search–Find Text operation was done, the Find Dialog was not retained on top of the document. Fixed.
- The Keep On Top option had some bugs. Fixed.
- Subdialogs sometimes went behind the General Options dialog, giving the impression of a hang. Fixed.
