WinX iPad Video Converter for Mac - Free Edition can be used to convert video files for playback on the iPad. The application can open pretty much any video file, and it encodes files using two of the most popular formats these days: MPEG-4 and H.264. Those can be played natively by the iPad, the iPhone, iPod Touch, any Mac and most modern computers.
The application's graphical user interface looks nearly identical to that of WinX's converters for Windows. In this case, since the app does work well, I don't mind the bad design. The interface consists of a space where the files on your conversion queue are listed at the top of the screen, and the conversion settings at the bottom. There are two tabs in the conversion settings pane: to iPad and to Music. The first one lets you convert videos for playback on your iPad and the second lets you convert your files to audio-only formats.
There are six conversion profiles available. One of them is ideal for HD files, since it uses a resolution of 720p. If you connect your iPad to an LCD TV, this is the profile that you want to use.
In my testing, I was able to convert an MKV file into H.264 with no problems, and quite fast.
